Po’ Boys Kitchen

by GrantPosted on June 14, 2021June 11, 2021

I don’t have a lot of experience with cajun food as I’ve never been to that part of the US. (It’s on my list though!) I’ve had it here and there, and I’ve enjoyed it, but it’s hard to know if it’s amazing. I do know that I also have never tried making it at home (also on my list), so it is helpful to try out places and at least get an idea of what the food is supposed to be like. Po’ Boys Kitchen opened up in our neighborhood, and I was eager to get over there and try it out.

We ordered a selection of food to try out including a fried oyster Po’ Boy ($14) served with french fries, fried okra ($6) and a chicken combo plate ($20). The combo plate came with four pieces of fried chicken, collard greens and mashed potatoes so we had a great selection to share all around. There was also a plethora of dipping sauces (hot and mild) to dip things into or add to your mains!

I’m not gonna like, the Po Boy was huge. A giant roll piled with veggies and some plump fried oysters. There is also a massive amount of fries, so for $14, it’s a pretty good deal. The sandwich was pretty excellent as well. Extra hot sauce on the sandwich was a great addition, and honestly I would definitely want to go back to try the other ones, especially the catfish. The fried okra was also outstanding. It was light and crispy, and also a lot of food for the price. The chicken was really disappointing though. It was a bit bland, and the addition of the hot sauce helped quite a bit, but on it’s own I can’t say I’d recommend it.

I’m definitely glad I tried it, and the Po Boy was a pretty stellar sandwich which is something I would have hoped for given they named their restaurant after it! It’s also nice to have something a bit different sometimes, and it’s fairly close to home, so it could be something I try again, but different menu items this time. If you do want a place that provides good value for money, it’s definitely a good choice for that!

Score: 3.5/5
Recommendation: Get a Po’ Boy! And some of that fried okra.
